Consistent with COTRAIC’s mission to promote the socio-economic development of the Native American community and others who experience the same type of socio-economic difficulties in the Greater Pittsburgh metropolitan area, the Elder’s Program was created to provide culturally relevant services for Native Americans ages 45 years and older in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.
About the Elders Program
As our population ages, many of our elders find themselves in need of support services which will allow them to maintain a sense of independence and promote the quality of their lives. Unfortunately, some of those eligible for services are unaware of the resources available to them, uncomfortable asking for help or don’t have a support system that is able to assist them in securing the kind of services they need.
Program Benefits
Participants in the Elders Program can get information and referrals, as well as help in applying for services including: housing, home repairs, energy assistance, medical benefits, social security, access transportation, advocacy for the elderly, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, counseling with finances and daily living skills, consumerism, socialization and recreation, genealogy, veterans services etc.
The Native American Elders Program can help elders with their search for justice, inherited rights, socio-economic status, the right to be self-determining and more importantly, the right to be comfortable expressing who and what they are in a supportive culturally relevant environment.
